Most of our remote camps and lodges have limited or no phone signal, and rather than treat that as an inconvenience, many of our retreats build it into the programme deliberately — a genuine digital detox period alongside the yoga and safari activities.
The effect compounds over a few days: attention that would normally scatter across a phone settles instead on the landscape, the group, and the practice, in a way that’s hard to replicate at home no matter how good your intentions are.
If total disconnection makes you nervous, most lodges do have some communal wifi for emergencies — but we’d gently encourage using it as little as possible. It’s usually the part of the trip guests say they miss most once they’re home.

For teachers bringing a group, it helps to set the expectation before departure rather than on arrival — let guests know which nights of the itinerary have limited signal so they can tell family and work in advance, rather than discovering it mid-trip.
We also flag emergency contact options at every property in the pre-departure guide, so “no signal” never means “unreachable” — just unreachable for anything short of an actual emergency, which is precisely the point.
The most common reflection we hear once guests are home is some version of “I didn’t realise how much I was checking my phone until I couldn’t” — a realisation that tends to land harder in the bush than any amount of advice beforehand.
Several guests have told us they extended the detox voluntarily once home, at least for the first few days, having noticed how much calmer the limited-signal stretch of the retreat felt compared with ordinary life.
We don’t enforce this — anyone who needs to stay reachable for work or family absolutely can, using the limited wifi most properties do offer — but the guests who lean into the disconnection consistently report it as one of the retreat’s most valuable parts.
