Southern Africa’s dry season, roughly May through October, is the classic safari window across Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia: thinning bush means easier wildlife viewing, and rainfall is minimal for outdoor practice. It’s also peak season, so lodges book out furthest in advance.
South Africa runs on a different rhythm — the Cape’s best weather falls September to April, opposite the safari calendar further north, which is part of why it pairs so well with a second-country extension.
Namibia is dry nearly year-round, so timing there comes down to temperature more than rainfall — cooler nights May through October make for more comfortable desert mornings. Whichever window you choose, we build the itinerary and pricing around the season, not the other way round.

Shoulder months — April and November, roughly — often give the best value across the safari countries: fewer crowds, lower rates, and weather that’s still comfortable for outdoor practice, even if wildlife viewing is marginally less concentrated than peak season.
For groups combining two countries, season becomes a scheduling puzzle as much as a comfort question — a Cape Town leg in March pairs naturally with a Botswana or Zambia leg starting in April or May, right as the safari countries dry out. We map this out at the itinerary stage so the transition between destinations lines up with each one’s best window.
When a teacher isn’t sure which window suits their group, we usually start by asking what matters most: wildlife density, weather comfort, or price. Each answer points toward a different set of months, and there’s rarely a single “best” answer that fits every group.
We also factor in group composition — a retreat aimed at experienced safari-goers can handle the hotter, buggier months for a lower rate, while a group of total first-timers usually does better in the more forgiving shoulder season.
Once we know the priority, we cross-reference it against lodge availability, since the best properties in each destination book out furthest ahead for their peak window — which is also why we recommend enquiring 6 to 12 months out wherever possible.
