What to Pack for a Yoga Safari in Africa

January 26, 2026

Layers do the most work. Mornings on the Zambezi or in the bush start cold enough for a fleece, and by mid-morning you’re usually down to a T-shirt — breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics for practice, plus one warm layer for sunrise and sunset game drives.

For the mat: comfortable, non-restrictive clothing you don’t mind getting a little dusty, and closed shoes for anything involving a walking safari. We provide mats and props at every practice venue, so you don’t need to bring your own.

Beyond that: neutral-coloured safari clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and a good pair of binoculars if you have them. We send every guest a full pre-departure packing guide specific to their itinerary and season, so nothing is left to guesswork.

A Few Things First-Timers Forget

Insect repellent and a basic first-aid kit are easy to overlook but worth having on hand, along with any personal medication in carry-on luggage rather than checked bags. A lightweight rain jacket earns its space too, even in the dry season — mornings on the water can turn misty fast.

One thing you don’t need to worry about: gear for the practice itself. Every venue on our itineraries — riverside decks, sunrise platforms, lodge lawns — comes equipped with mats, blocks and straps, so packing light for yoga specifically is genuinely an option.

What You Genuinely Don’t Need

Formal clothing has no place on this kind of trip — lodges and camps operate on a relaxed, practical dress code even at dinner, so you can leave anything structured or delicate at home.

A full first-aid kit beyond the basics is also unnecessary; every lodge and camp we work with has trained staff and supplies on-site, and our pre-departure guide flags anything destination-specific worth carrying yourself.

And despite what packing lists elsewhere might suggest, you don’t need camouflage or safari-branded gear — neutral, comfortable clothing in muted tones does the job just as well, and often more comfortably.
